Conversion Tracking Setup

Paid Feature

Conversion tracking is only available as part of a paid subscription plan, so please ensure you have an active subscription before continuing

Automatic Conversion Tracking

The conversion tracking system will automatically create conversion events based on your incoming data. It will try to intelligently identify registration events, orders, file downloads, and form completions. You can view these, and other conversion events, by clicking on the conversion tracking menu on the sidebar in your profile. Here, you will see all the current converstion events you are tracking and how many conversions that have been tracked in the past seven days.

Add a Conversion Event

From the conversion tracking menu, you can add a new event to track. Simply click the Add Conversion button and fill in the modal menu that appears. You will need to provide this data:

  • Unique Name: This is a name for the conversion event you are tracking. This needs to be unique across all of the events you have tracked
  • Description: A freeform text description to help you further identify the tracked event. This can be left blank
  • Search Area: The area we will be searching to match the conversion event. You have 3 options
    1. Page URL: Searching the url of the page on your site. An example would be if you have a thank you page that is shown after an order. The url would be www.example.com/thank_you.html. We would want to search in the Page URL for 'thank_you.html' to track these order conversions
    2. Referral URL: Like the page url, but only tracking from other sites sending track to your site. This can be helpful if you have a paypal type order flow that send traffic offsite to pay, but then is referred back to your site from a specific url, like : www.paypal.com/order_completed?orderid=1. We can use the referral URL option to search for paypal.com/order_complete for these conversions
    3. Target Item: This is useful for links to external sites or non tracked pages, like a pdf whitepaper download. When a user clicks on a link on a tracked page, the link target is captured as the Target Item. An example would be to track the clicks to a file download at www.example.com/white_paper.pdf. We can use the Target Item to track 'white_paper.pdf' for this conversion item
  • Match Type is the type of search we will be doing. There are 4 options:
    1. Is: An exact match of the value is required. Helpful for tracking specific pages or files
    2. Starts With: Will search for your match starting with the front. This is helpful if you have an item you want to track that has dynamic parameters that get added to the end of the URL. Like www.example.com/orderid=123, you can use 'Starts With' to search for orderid, and it will find all the orders
    3. Contains: Like Starts With, but it is not limited to just the beginning of the URL. This is the most common option used.
    4. Ends With: Again, like the Starts With option, but the match must be at the end of the URL
  • Search Value: The text that will be searched for using the previous options. Common examples would be 'orderid', 'checkout', 'contact_us', and 'download'. It's important to remember this is how the term appears in the URL.
Modify an Event

From the conversion tracking menu, you can select the action dots next to any existing conversion tracking event. From here, you can select the option to modify the event. This will allow you to select new rules, add or change the description, and save the newly modified event. Once the event is saved, the conversion list will update with the found number of conversions in the past 7 days, using the newly modified data.

Delete an Event

From the conversion tracking menu, you can select the action dots next to any existing conversion tracking event. From here, you can select the option to delete the event. Deleting an event can not be undone, however, since the data is captured, it is possible to recreate the same event with the same rules and get access to the number of historical conversion events again.

Limitations

You are not limited to the number of conversion events you want to track. The events can not track any conversions that happened before the NLevel Analytics code was installed on your site though. Once the code is installed on your site, you can create, modify, delete, and recreate as many events as you would like.

If you come across an event that you would like to track, but for some reason are unable to get it tracked using the conversion event system, please contact us! It is possible we can add a custom event for you, or increase the flexibility of the conversion event system.
